Plot
When Emma Corrigan goes on her very first important business trip, things don't go exactly as planned. On her flight home she begins to spill some of her most precious secrets to the man sitting next to her. After all, he is just a stranger she will never see again. Right?
When she returns to work on Monday morning, her co-workers are rushing around talking about the arrival of CEO Jack Harper. Emma doesn't think much of it until she comes face to face with the stranger from the airplane. The man who knows all her deepest secrets is also her boss.
Jack Harper is visiting the company for a full week. Will he remember Emma and her crazy stories? Will he tell anyone? Will he fire her? Get ready for a whirlwind of hilarious chaos.
Characters
Emma - The leading lady has her nervous, shy side which makes her doubt herself more than she should, but watch out when her bold, take charge attitude does shine through on occasion. She has some serious family issues, and some pretty interesting secrets.
Jack Harper - This stranger on the plane/CEO is constantly surprising people with his disheveled appearance and pre-occupied mind. Something has been clearly bothering him since his best friend and business partner, Paul, died in an accident. He is harboring some secrets of his own.
Connor - The oh-so-oblivious boyfriend who doesn't know Emma as well as he thinks he does. He is handsome and successful in his career, and everyone tells them they are the perfect couple.
Kerry - The evil cousin who Emma can never seem to live up to.
Lissy - The amazingly genius lawyer best friend.
Jemima - The model-esque roommate with the trendy clothes and serious mean streak.
Artemis - The cranky co-worker who makes life difficult for Emma. (Emma secretly feeds her plant orange juice to get even.)
Katie - The crochet loving, socially awkward co-worker who idolizes Emma.
What I Thought
This type of book is always associated with summer for me. I call them beachy reads, even though I live nowhere near a beach. It's your typical chick-lit, easy to read type of story. There is drama and romance and lots of fun inner monologue, but it's still fast-paced enough to get through quickly. This is the type of book you read when you're on a fun vacation somewhere.
I laughed a lot while reading this book, and I found myself getting really attached to the characters. I could see myself working in the office with Emma, dealing with the obnoxious and bizarre co-workers. Like a true chit-lit story, there was plenty of heart-wrenching romantic scenes as well.
Overall, I give this book five stars. This was my first Sophie Kinsella novel, and I plan to read her others as well.
