Quick Tip Tuesday
Give Your Photos A Name

Hi everyone! Today I just wanted to share with you a quick tip I learned from last week's Crafterminds chat. Crafterminds is a group of lovely ladies who are lifestyle and craft bloggers. Every week they host a chat session on Twitter at 1pm Pacific time. All you have to do is search #crafterminds and you will be able to find the chat and join in. If you can't make it (which I usually can't) then you can read the transcript later that day or the next at the Crafterminds website. I read last week's #crafterminds chat which was about SEO (Search Engine Optimization), basically tips on how to get found on search engines like Google. There was a lot of great information in that chat, and I highly recommend reading it. The tip I want to share with you today deals with naming your photos.

If you are like me, you are guilty of just uploading a picture with the automatic IMG_1234567 name attached to it. I never really thought about it being a big deal before. Once I read the #crafterminds chat, I realized I was missing out on huge traffic to my blog possibilities! If you have a picture named IMG_1234567 in your blog post, the only people who are going to find your post in an Image search are people who search for all pictures named IMG_1234567.

If I leave this picture I took of a bridge titled IMG_4358 then I will most likely NEVER be found in an image search. Which means I am missing out on all that traffic I could be directing at my blog. Instead I will name it black_and_white_bridge or black-and-white-bridge or even blackandwhitebridge. That way, anyone who searches for a black and white image of a bridge might come across mine and be directed to my blog.

You can name entire batches of photos with the same name. If I had selected all of the black and white photos I took of this bridge and clicked "rename," I could have typed black-and-white-bridge and the computer would automatically call them black-and-white-bridge1, black-and-white-bridge2, black-and-white-bridge3 ... etc.

This is really important for tutorials. For my earring frame tutorial I would name my photos how-to-make-an-earring-frame 1,2,3 etc. or something like earring-frame-tutorial 1,2,3 etc.  Keep this in mind when you are naming your images. Name them something relevant to what's going on in the picture or the post. Use words that you would search for if you wanted to find that picture.

By naming your photos, you can dramatically increase your traffic flow over time. I hope this tip was helpful. I know I just never thought about it, but I'm naming my pictures all the time now!

Hey neighbor ;) Great photo. And your blog looks great. It almost makes me want to do mine over again... I've gotta learn to be satisfied with the way I fix it. I've already redone mine like 4 times. blaaahh!

@Meredith - Thanks! I hope you get your hands on one. They are amazing. I am guilty of not even knowing how to use all the amazing things it does. I should try harder to appreciate it!

@Ashley - Thanks for the compliment. I know what you mean about changing your blog a million times. I am also guilty of not just letting things stay how they are!

@Erica - It seems like such a simple thing, but it really helps. Glad to know I'm not the only one who was a lazy photo manager!

This isn't blog related persay, but it's something I learned while organizing my photos on my personal computer.
I create folders of years and then months (or quarterly, depending on the number of photos) then I take the time to go through each photo and assign property keywords to them. (Yes, you can select a group to do at once if they're all the same) So for instance Mary's first birthday all have keywords in them such as: Mary, birthday, 2010. This way if I find myself needing a specific picture in the future, and I'm not quite sure when it was taken, I can use Windows search option to find it instead of scrolling through thousands of pictures in various folders on my HD. When I made the memory book for instance, I knew I wanted pictures of Grandma, and certain people, I just typed their names in the search, and those pictures that had those keywords came up.
It does take some time to add keywords to the pics, but I just dedicate some time to it, once a month or every two, depending on how often I'm photographing. This seems to work better for me than renaming the pic, because then I can keep them in order taken within the folders, and also don't have to remember that I already have 21 photos of first bday so need to name the next one firstbday22.jpg
While youre at it, don't forget to back up those precious memories to several different places!

Julie - That is such a great idea. I applaud you for your dedication. I really need to get on the ball with naming things in a useful manner. It's not a fun task but definitely useful for the future. Thanks for sharing!

What a great tip! I'm so new to blogging also and SEO it isn't even on my radar yet. Ugh, all the little things about blogging that take up so much time! But I love that blogging makes me actually DO all the projects I have ideas for. And I need to spend some serious time in the Blog Design 101 links you posted, thanks! I love your new look, so cute!

Oh, PS I saw your comment on Positvely Splendid and, being a brand new blogger myself, had to head over and say hello!

Thanks for stopping by Nicole! Good luck on getting the blog up and running smoothly. It's a work in progress, but I agree that it's nice that blogging forces you to actually do your projects. Let me know if you need any help with the blog design. I'll share whatever I've learned. :)
